Captained vs. Self-Operated Boat Rentals on Percy Priest Lake
Wondering whether to book a captained charter or take the wheel yourself? Here’s what you should know before making your choice.
Captained Charters:
Opting for a trip with a licensed captain is all about relaxation. The captain takes care of everything—from steering and docking to finding the best party coves and scenic hangouts. This option is perfect for groups who want to focus on celebrating, soaking up the Nashville sun, and enjoying themselves without worrying about navigation. Plus, with a captain on board, there’s no need for a boater’s license, so you can kick back and let the pros handle the details.Self-Operated Rentals:
Feeling adventurous and confident behind the wheel? Self-operated pontoons put you in the captain’s seat. These rentals are a hit with experienced boaters who know their way around the lake. Just keep in mind: you’ll need prior boating experience and, if anyone in your group was born after January 1, 1989, Tennessee requires a valid boater education card. A security deposit is usually part of the deal. This option gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, but you’ll be responsible for the safety and fun of your crew.No matter which you choose, you’re in for an unforgettable day cruising Percy Priest Lake!
Tennessee weather can be a bit unpredictable—one minute you’re basking in the sunshine, the next you might spot a storm rolling in. Your safety is our top priority. If conditions turn unsafe due to rain, storms, or high winds, your Captain will make the call to delay, adjust the route, or even reschedule your trip. We’re always watching the forecast and will keep you posted with any updates.
If there’s a weather delay or cancellation, we’ll work with you to find the best solution—whether that’s waiting out a quick summer shower, rebooking for another day, or issuing a refund according to our policy. Have a concern about the forecast? Feel free to reach out before your trip, and we’ll help you make the right call for your day on the lake.
Tennessee weather can be unpredictable—think sudden summer storms or a surprise gusty afternoon. Your captain is always keeping an eye on the radar so your group stays safe. If lightning or unsafe conditions pop up, trips may be delayed, rerouted, or even rescheduled for another day.
Cancellation and weather policies do vary a bit depending on your specific booking. Typically, you’ll see details at checkout, but here’s what’s common:
- If the weather makes it unsafe to go out, you’ll usually be offered the choice to reschedule or get a refund.
- Most companies (including Rowdy Boats!) have clear guidelines for cancellations—some offer a full refund with enough notice, while last-minute cancellations may be subject to a fee.
- Keep an eye on your confirmation email for specifics, and always reach out if the forecast looks dicey. We’re here to help you adjust plans if needed.

Boating Regulations for Percy Priest Lake
Before you set sail on Percy Priest Lake, it’s important to know the basic boating rules and safety requirements so you can focus on having fun (and not running afoul of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency).
Boating License Requirements
If you’re planning to drive a boat yourself, Tennessee law requires that anyone born on or after January 1, 1989 must have a Tennessee Boater Education Certificate, or if you’re visiting, a NASBLA-approved boating safety card. Children under 12 can’t operate a boat over 8.5 horsepower unless an adult is on board who can immediately take control. Good news—if you’re kicking back on a captained charter (like with Rowdy Boats), your captain handles all licensing and operation.
Safety Gear & Kids on Board
Safety first! All boats are equipped with U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets for adults. By law, every child 12 and under must wear a life jacket at all times while the boat is underway. We carry life jackets for most sizes, but if you have infants or younger kids who need a perfect fit, bring your own to ensure comfort and safety.
Weather Awareness
Weather on Percy Priest Lake can change quickly—summer storms are famous for popping up out of nowhere. Our captains keep an eye on the radar and will only set out when it’s safe. Should the weather turn sour, we’ll delay, reroute, or reschedule your outing if there are safety concerns. Always check the cancellation policy when you book, and let us know if the forecast makes you nervous—your safety is our top priority.
With these simple rules in mind, you’re all set for a safe and memorable day on the lake!
We love our pets as much as anyone else, but, unfortunately, we cannot allow them on our boats due to cleaning and safety issues.
If you’re planning to take the wheel yourself, Tennessee law requires that anyone born on or after January 1, 1989, must have a Tennessee Boater Education Certificate (for residents) or a NASBLA-approved boating safety card (for out-of-state visitors) before operating a vessel with more than 8.5 horsepower. Kids under 12 aren’t allowed to drive motorboats unless an adult is right there to take control if needed.
However, if you’re booking one of our captained charters, you can kick back and relax—no boating license required. Our licensed captains handle all the driving so you can focus on having a good time out on the lake.
